How to track household expenses in India without a messy spreadsheet

A practical system for Indian household expenses: categories that match real spend, household vs personal scope, recurring bills, and a month versus financial-year view.

Start with the bill, not the category theory

Open Monezy, pick the person who paid (or Household if it came from the pool), and tap Expense. Enter the amount in rupees, a title a future-you will recognise — “Society maintenance Apr”, not “misc” — and a date. Category is a filing label, not a moral judgement.

  • Housing — rent, EMI, society, repairs
  • Food — groceries, cook, tiffin, dining out
  • Transport — fuel, metro, cab, servicing
  • Utilities — electricity, broadband, mobile, gas
  • Health, education, household help, and discretionary

Household spend vs personal spend

A common fight in Indian homes is “was this ours or yours?” Monezy answers with scope. Log school fees on Household or on the parent who paid, then switch the top bar to see either picture. Personal dining and family groceries stop collapsing into one angry total.

If the money actually left the shared kitty, log it as Pool spend instead of a personal expense. That keeps the pool honest and the personal burn rate honest.

Copy last month’s bills

Rent, school, broadband, and help salaries barely change. When a new month starts, copy last month’s bills instead of retyping them, then edit the one-off spikes. Recurring should feel boring. The interesting work is noticing what is not recurring — medical, travel, festivals, and “just this once” shopping.

Read the month, then the financial year

A single expensive wedding month can panic a household that is fine across FY. Flip the period filter from Month to FY. Expenses roll up across April–March so Diwali and school admission fees sit in the year they belong, not as a personal failure in October.

Reports then show how money moved: what left, what was invested, and whether the house still netted positive after the loud months.
